About Emergent Space Technologies

Emergent Space Technologies, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Dr. George Davis with the goal of bringing modern information technology practices to the aerospace industry. Headquartered in Laurel, Maryland (with an additional office in Austin, Texas), Emergent grew into a small-business leader in astrodynamics, guidance navigation and control (GN&C), orbital mechanics, positioning/navigation/timing (PNT), satellite ground systems, and flight software for autonomous and multi-spacecraft missions, including constellations, formations, and clusters of small satellites. The company was CMMI Level 3 appraised and built its business around systems engineering, integration and test, and software architecture and development for demanding space applications.

Over two decades Emergent developed roughly a dozen proprietary flight and ground software products - including Gear, Autopilot, Guardian, Commander, Cirrus, Ascent, Summit, Navigator, and Yeti - covering areas such as flight software frameworks, autonomy, edge/cloud computing in space, and mission operations tooling. Its customer base expanded from NASA's early satellite formation and constellation programs to include DARPA, the U.S. Space Force, the Space Development Agency, NOAA, Intelsat, and other civil, military, and commercial customers, with work spanning rendezvous and proximity operations, cislunar navigation, and deep space exploration support.

On June 7, 2023, Emergent Space Technologies was acquired by York Space Systems, a Denver-based spacecraft manufacturer, combining Emergent's astrodynamics, GN&C, and flight/ground software expertise with York's spacecraft platform and manufacturing business. Announcing the deal, York CEO Dirk Wallinger said "the future of satellite technology is all about software," while Emergent founder Dr. George Davis noted that "over the last 20 years we've built a successful, highly regarded company" and that the York team shared Emergent's customer-centric approach. Following the acquisition, Emergent's technology, products, and engineering team were folded into York Space Systems, and the standalone emergentspace.com site is no longer live; the company's legacy and personnel now operate as part of York Space Systems.
