About Iota Technology

Iota Technology is a UK-based space company that designs, builds, and operates small satellites to collect high-precision geomagnetic data from low Earth orbit, in direct support of the World Magnetic Model (WMM) used globally for navigation, defense, and geophysics. Its flagship product is the Io-1 satellite — a 4U CubeSat carrying both a vector fluxgate magnetometer and an atomic scalar magnetometer on a deployable boom — built in partnership with Bartington Instruments, Twinleaf, Open Space Systems, RAL Space, and ArcSec. The company's work is backed by the UK Space Agency, ESA Business Incubation Centre, and the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's MagQuest program, with Io-1 selected as a MagQuest Phase 4a winner. Io-1 launched on 30 March 2026 with AAC Clyde Space handling manufacture, launch, commissioning, and three years of operations, with follow-on missions Io-2 and Io-3 planned to extend the dataset.

Milestones

  • 2019 Design phase begins, supported by ESA BIC and Magquest Phases 2 & 3
  • 2021 Prototype instrument testing at NASA Goddard (Magquest Phase 4)
  • 2026 Io-1 launched to LEO, delivering magnetic field data for the World Magnetic Model
