About Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducts small satellite research through its Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, primarily via the MIT Space Systems Laboratory (SSL) and the Space Telecommunications, Astronomy and Radiation Laboratory (STAR Lab). These groups give graduate and undergraduate students hands-on experience across the full spacecraft lifecycle, from concept and design through fabrication, testing, and on-orbit operations.
MIT's most notable recent CubeSat effort is the MicroMAS program, developed in partnership with MIT Lincoln Laboratory. MicroMAS-2, a 3U CubeSat carrying a miniaturized microwave spectrometer, demonstrated low-cost atmospheric temperature and humidity sounding for weather forecasting after deploying from the International Space Station in 2018. The program built on earlier MIT CubeSat missions and continues to inform NOAA and NASA interest in disaggregated, small-satellite weather constellations.
Beyond MicroMAS, MIT's space labs have contributed to missions such as REXIS (an X-ray spectrometer flown on NASA's OSIRIS-REx) and numerous formation-flying and autonomy testbeds, reflecting the university's broader role as a pipeline for CubeSat engineering talent and flight-proven small-satellite technology.
