NTNU SmallSat Lab

NTNU SmallSat Lab is a research and education community for space activities in Norway, operating two research satellites, HYPSO-1 and HYPSO-2, which were launched on August 16, 2024. The lab conducts research in small satellite and remote sensing, including missions with hyperspectral imagers for oceanographic applications and software-defined radios for Arctic communication systems. It also supports student satellite projects like SelfieSat-1 and FRAMSAT-1 & FRAMSAT-1.5. The lab collaborates with the Norwegian Research Council, Norwegian Space Agency, ESA, and EEA/EU, and is part of the ESA_Labs@NTNU initiative and the Auroraspace project. Its facilities include computing equipment, a concurrent design workspace, an ESD-safe area for electronic and mechanical development, an industrial thermal vacuum chamber, and an optical lab. The lab controls and operates its own satellites in orbit. It is headquartered in Trondheim, Norway, as part of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The research group consists of approximately ten PhD students, several post-doctoral researchers, and 10-30 bachelor and master students each semester.
