Description
Orbex Prime is a two-stage orbital micro-launch vehicle designed and built by Orbex for the small satellite market. The vehicle's engineering team completely re-thought and re-designed the launch vehicle from avionics and software to structures and propulsion, using a wide range of advanced materials and techniques including additive manufacturing for the majority of the propulsion subsystem and carbon-fibre composites for the main structures and tanks.
Prime burns a renewable, bio-propane (BioLPG) fuel that cuts carbon emissions by around 90% compared to traditional hydrocarbon rocket fuels. Its novel architecture saves around 30% of inert mass, increasing efficiency by roughly 20%. The rocket uses lightweight, high-performance 3D-printed rocket engines manufactured in a single piece without joins, a redundant smart-ignition system with no moving parts or electrics for on-orbit re-start and circularisation, and independent low-temperature turbo-pumps driving each stage-1 engine. Guidance, navigation and control (GNC) algorithms are flight-proven. Prime is designed to be reusable: on return to Earth, components that do not burn up harmlessly in the atmosphere are recovered and re-used.
Orbex provides flexible, reliable and dedicated orbital launch services to small satellite customers using Prime, targeting sun-synchronous orbit (SSO), high-inclination LEO and polar orbits, in contrast to rideshare providers and much larger rockets, giving customers greater control over mission requirements. The vehicle's planned home spaceport is Space Hub Sutherland in the north of Scotland. First test launches were targeted for later in 2026; the company has commercial launch commitments from several satellite customers.
