Tohoku University (Space Robotics Lab)

Tohoku University (Space Robotics Lab) is a research institution based in Tohoku, Japan, focused on the development of technologies for space exploration. The lab conducts research on the mechanisms, dynamics, and control of spacecraft and space exploration robots, including those orbiting in space and those designed to explore planets. They are involved in elucidating the mechanics of robots operating in space environments and developing new mechanisms and control methods. The lab is deeply involved in Japan’s space development missions, primarily with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). They also aim to develop university-led small satellites. Their work includes the joint development of the ultra-small satellite “HOKUSHIN-1” with Hokkaido University and Muroran Institute of Technology, with a flight model delivered to a launch agency for a scheduled launch in spring 2026 or later. They have also developed the lunar robot “Moonbot,” which has undergone experiments at the European Space Agency (ESA)/German Aerospace Center (DLR) and has had research published in IEEE Transactions on Field Robotics. The lab also applies technologies developed for space exploration to terrestrial applications, such as disaster response robots.
