UNAM has been a pioneer in Mexican space science. Its Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Institute of Geophysics, and Institute of Astronomy conduct active space research programs. UNAM researchers have contributed to Mexico's satellite programs and collaborate with international space agencies on space science missions.

UNAM's space activities span satellite technology development, space physics research, radio astronomy, atmospheric science, and planetary science. The university participates in international space missions and operates scientific instruments on satellites. UNAM also contributes to Mexico's national space program through research on space weather, Earth observation, and telecommunications satellites including the Morelos and MEXSAT series.

The Department of Space Sciences and the Space Sciences Laboratory support student involvement in satellite projects and space research.
