The University of Maryland's Space Systems Laboratory (SSL), within the A. James Clark School of Engineering's Department of Aerospace Engineering, is a longstanding hub for hands-on spacecraft and space robotics research. UMD's student CubeSat efforts operate under the UMD Satellite Development Program (SatDev) and student groups such as SEDS@UMD, giving undergraduates direct experience designing, building, and testing small satellites.

UMD's current flagship CubeSat effort is the SatFab 3U CubeSat, led by a student team of roughly twenty undergraduates and targeting NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative for a future ISS deployment. SatFab is designed to demonstrate an in-house-built GPS receiver alongside a novel phase-change-material thermal control system for spacecraft electronics, addressing a key challenge in small-satellite thermal management. UMD students have also pursued earlier projects such as TerpSat, the university's first student-designed CubeSat concept, and are developing follow-on missions including THEIA, a planned 6U CubeSat for event-based imaging technology demonstration.

Through these programs, UMD trains students in the full spacecraft development lifecycle while contributing new CubeSat subsystem technologies — GPS, thermal control, and imaging — to the broader small-satellite community.
