The Space Flight Laboratory (SFL), established in 1998 at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS), researched and developed technologies for small spacecraft. SFL developed missions for Earth observation, communications, surveillance and monitoring, technology demonstrations, and planetary science. Its customers included commercial organizations, government, and academic research institutions. SFL also developed modular, scalable power systems and supported launch services for small satellites, microsatellites, and nanosatellites. The company developed custom small satellites, microsatellites, and nanosatellites ranging from 3 to 500 kilograms, built on space-proven platforms. Innovations included advanced attitude control, precise pointing, and autonomous formation flying technologies. SFL achieved over 376 cumulative years of operation in orbit and more than 80 operational successes for applications such as Earth observation, atmospheric monitoring, ship tracking, communication, RF geolocation, technology demonstration, space astronomy, solar physics, and space plasma. SFL's satellite manufacturing operations are being wound down, and it is not accepting new clients, focusing on academic delivery.
