University of Wuerzburg

The Julius-Maximilians-Universitat Wurzburg, founded in 1402, is one of the oldest universities in Germany. Its aerospace information technology group, part of the Chair of Computer Science VII, runs the UWE satellite program, a series of 1U CubeSats used to advance distributed and formation-flying small satellite technology.

Starting with UWE-1 in 2005, the program progressed through UWE-2 and UWE-3, culminating in UWE-4, the world's first 1U CubeSat equipped with an electric propulsion system, enabling precise formation flying maneuvers in orbit. UWE-3, launched in 2013, demonstrated a modular, fault-tolerant satellite bus and a real-time attitude determination and control system that made it one of the longest continuously operating picosatellites of its class.

The UWE program has become a reference platform internationally for research into miniaturized satellite bus architecture, autonomous attitude control, and networked small-satellite swarms, and continues with newer missions such as UWE-5.
