Description
GASPACS (Get Away Special Passive Attitude Control Satellite) was a NASA-sponsored 1U CubeSat developed entirely by undergraduate members of Utah State University's Get Away Special (GAS) student team in the Department of Physics. It was delivered to the International Space Station in late 2021 as part of NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative and deployed into orbit on January 26, 2022, operating for 117 days before atmospheric reentry on May 23, 2022.
The satellite's primary technology demonstration objective was the deployment of AeroBoom, a 1-meter inflatable aerodynamic boom designed to passively stabilize the CubeSat's attitude using aerodynamic drag in low Earth orbit, offering a low-power, low-complexity alternative to active attitude control systems for small satellites. GASPACS also holds several notable firsts in the CubeSat community: it was the first CubeSat mission developed completely by undergraduate students from initial concept through launch and operations, and the first CubeSat to fly a Raspberry Pi Zero as its primary flight computer, demonstrating that low-cost commercial hardware could serve reliably in a spaceflight role.
The GASPACS mission built on Utah State University's decades of Get Away Special experience with NASA Space Shuttle payloads and cemented USU's reputation, alongside the Space Dynamics Laboratory, as a leading center for hands-on, student-driven small satellite engineering education.
