Description
VSS Unity (SpaceShipTwo) is Virgin Galactic's commercial suborbital spaceplane, designed for carrying up to six passengers and two pilots to the edge of space (approximately 85 km altitude) before gliding back to a runway landing. The vehicle is carried to altitude by the VMS Eve (WhiteKnightTwo) mothership, then released for a rocket-powered ascent.
The hybrid rocket motor burns hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) solid fuel with nitrous oxide oxidizer, providing approximately 70 seconds of burn time. Feathering re-entry technology allows the vehicle to adopt a high-drag 'shuttlecock' position for safe atmospheric re-entry without tiles or ablative materials.
Passengers experience several minutes of weightlessness and a view of Earth's curvature before the craft glides back to Spaceport America in New Mexico. The vehicle holds a commercial launch license from the FAA and has been certified for human spaceflight.
