About

Alya Space is developing miniaturized optical communication systems for CubeSats — specifically intersatellite links (ISL) using laser communication to enable high-bandwidth data transfers between satellites in a constellation. The company’s name references Alya (Theta Serpentis), a bright binary star in the Serpens constellation — reflecting the concept of paired optical communication nodes.

Conventional radio frequency (RF) ISLs between satellites are bandwidth-limited due to spectrum congestion and physics constraints. Laser (optical) ISLs can achieve data rates 10–100× higher than equivalent-mass RF systems (1+ Gbps vs. 100 Mbps for RF), potentially enabling large constellations to backhaul data between satellites at fiber-like speeds without using limited RF spectrum. SpaceX Starlink Gen 2 uses laser ISLs between satellites for this reason.

Alya Space is miniaturizing the pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) mechanisms and the laser transceiver electronics to fit within a 3U–6U CubeSat form factor — making laser ISL technology accessible to commercial smallsat constellation operators who cannot afford the large optical modules used on government missions like LCRD (Laser Communications Relay Demonstration). The company targets the growing number of commercial LEO constellation operators who need high-rate satellite-to-satellite communication.
