About
Project Kuiper is Amazon’s LEO broadband satellite internet constellation, approved by the FCC in 2020 for 3,236 satellites at altitudes of 590–630 km in multiple orbital planes. Kuiper targets residential broadband for underserved areas, enterprise connectivity, and government services — directly competing with SpaceX Starlink, OneWeb, and Telesat Lightspeed in the commercial LEO broadband market.
Amazon launched its first two prototype satellites (KuiperSat-1 and KuiperSat-2) on a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket in 2023, validating propulsion, power, communications, and on-orbit operations. Amazon began production launches in 2024, using Amazon’s substantial launch procurement agreements with ULA (Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur), Arianespace (Ariane 6), and Blue Origin (New Glenn) — one of the most diversified launch procurement portfolios in commercial space.
Kuiper user terminals are designed for consumer hardware at two price points: a standard terminal targeting residential users and a compact terminal for mobility applications. Amazon’s FCC license requires 50% of the constellation deployed by 2026. The constellation is designed with Ka-band inter-satellite links and gateway terminals integrated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure, enabling tight integration with Amazon’s cloud computing services.
