About
Avant Space is a Russian private space startup developing the GRail (Grand Rail) project — a satellite cluster designed to project visible laser light displays in the night sky, creating artificial ‘stars’ or simple pattern displays visible to observers on the ground. The GRail concept uses multiple 100W+ laser sources on satellites in low Earth orbit, creating pixel-like points of light that can be arranged to spell messages or create simple images visible from a city.
The project is positioned for two markets: high-impact outdoor advertising in major cities (a single pixel display visible across a metropolitan area) and space-themed artistic installations. Unlike ALE Co.’s particle-based artificial meteor approach (which creates transient shooting stars), GRail’s laser-based concept would create persistent, repositionable light points.
Avant Space acknowledges significant technical and regulatory challenges: laser power, beam divergence, atmospheric turbulence, and international coordination for use of high-powered lasers from space. The project has generated significant public debate about whether space advertising should be permitted and has been controversial among the astronomy community (artificial satellites already disrupt observation; adding lasers is a further concern).
