About
Boreal Space is a startup developing small synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites optimized for high-latitude applications — the polar regions, Arctic shipping lanes, and Northern European and Canadian agricultural areas. The ‘Boreal’ name directly references the company’s geographic focus on high-latitude regions where conventional optical satellites are particularly limited by cloud cover and polar darkness.
SAR satellites are uniquely suited to high-latitude monitoring: they operate in any weather, any time of day, and at high latitudes a polar SSO satellite has dramatically higher revisit rates than at mid-latitudes (polar regions are imaged on nearly every orbit). This makes boreal regions some of the best-served areas for SAR in terms of temporal coverage.
Boreal Space’s satellite design uses a compact X-band or C-band SAR payload optimized for ship detection in Arctic shipping lanes (Northern Sea Route, Northwest Passage), sea ice monitoring, and agricultural field condition monitoring in boreal agricultural zones. The company is targeting customers in Norway, Canada, Finland, and Sweden who need operational SAR data for maritime, environmental, and agricultural applications.
