About

Clutch Space Systems designs and manufactures satellite separation mechanisms — the critical pyrotechnic or non-explosive actuator systems that physically separate a satellite from its launch vehicle or deploy a payload from a dispenser at the correct moment in a launch mission. Reliable separation is mission-critical: premature separation or failure to separate are both catastrophic events.

Clutch Space’s product line includes spring-loaded separation systems (for CubeSats and smallsats deployed from dispensers), hold-down and release mechanisms (HDRMs) using shape-memory alloy (SMA) actuators as pyrotechnic-free alternatives, and motorized separation bolts for larger satellite interfaces. SMA actuators are increasingly preferred in commercial applications because they eliminate the shock, contamination, and regulatory complexity of pyrotechnic devices while providing reliable hold-down force and clean release.

The company also provides separation system engineering analysis — shock response spectrum prediction, separation spring design for specific orbit insertion velocity vectors, and contamination assessments. Clutch Space participates in the growing SmallSat ecosystem where low-cost, flight-proven separation hardware is needed in large quantities for constellation deployment. Their systems are designed to integrate with standard 6U, 12U, and ESPA-class interfaces.
