Smallsat Orbital Transfer Services

Commercial Space Technologies (CST)

Commercial Space Technologies' (CST) orbital transfer and last-mile delivery services for smallsats — moving satellites from standard rideshare drop-off orbits to precise customer-specified orbits.

Technical specifications

Service
Orbital transfer (space tug) from rideshare drop-off to customer target orbit
Applications
SSO local time adjustment, altitude changes, constellation slot filling
Competitors
D-Orbit ION, Exolaunch, Momentus Vigoride
Key parameter
LTAN (local time of ascending node) control for SSO customers
Market
Growing: rideshare is now standard, last-mile is the gap

About

Commercial Space Technologies (CST) is a space logistics company providing orbital transfer and ‘last-mile’ delivery services for small satellites. When smallsats launch as secondary payloads on rideshare missions (on vehicles like SpaceX Transporter, Rocket Lab, ISRO PSLV), they are typically deployed into a common orbit determined by the primary payload — which may not be the customer’s optimal operational orbit. CST’s space tug / orbital transfer vehicle (OTV) picks up smallsats from the rideshare drop-off orbit and transfers them to the customer’s precise target orbit.

CST’s OTV carries a cluster of smallsats from the rideshare drop-off point and individually maneuvers them to their designated orbital planes, altitudes, and local time of ascending node (LTAN) — which is critical for sun-synchronous orbit operators needing specific imaging solar angles. This service enables constellation operators to precisely populate their orbital architecture without waiting for a dedicated launch or paying for a custom orbit injection.

The orbital transfer market is growing as rideshare becomes standard for smallsat launches. CST competes with D-Orbit ION, Exolaunch/Reliance Space EOSDA, and Momentus Vigoride in providing space tug services. Key differentiators are propulsion efficiency, number of satellite interfaces, and ability to perform differential drag maneuvers to minimize propellant use.
