About
East Space (Dongfang Space, 东方空间) is a Chinese commercial launch company that developed Gravity-1 (引力一号, Yinli-1) — the world’s largest sea-launched solid-fuel rocket. Gravity-1 made its inaugural successful flight on January 11, 2024, launching from a sea platform in the Yellow Sea, demonstrating China’s growing commercial launch capability with large solid vehicles.
Gravity-1 is a four-stage solid-fueled launch vehicle with 235 metric tons liftoff mass, capable of delivering 6,500 kg to 500 km sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) — making it the world’s largest solid rocket by payload capacity. Its sea-launch capability from a mobile maritime platform provides greater flexibility in launch azimuth and removes range safety constraints of fixed land-based facilities.
Gravity-2 (Yinli-2) is in development using a more advanced combination of solid + liquid stages to improve payload fraction and reusability. Dongfang Space is one of China’s best-capitalized commercial space startups, backed by major Chinese venture investors. The Gravity series targets the growing commercial constellation deployment market, particularly for clients needing to launch multiple large batches of constellation satellites simultaneously.
