Edge1 is a pioneering ‘Above-the-Cloud’ web service developed by OrbitsEdge, Inc. It addresses the growing bottleneck of sending satellite data back to Earth for processing by enabling data processing and decision-making directly in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The service aims to improve various applications such as weather forecasting, communications, imagery analysis, and in-space assembly and manufacturing. By shifting earth-bound cloud computing models to space, Edge1 leverages Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components within a well-designed satellite bus to create robust systems capable of surviving the rigors of space. This approach significantly cuts the costs associated with developing new satellite technologies. Edge1 provides industry-standard systems, storage, and software in orbit, which are then networked to standard satellite communications. Ultimately, OrbitsEdge, through Edge1, will provide analytics in space to sift Earth Observation data and maximize usable intelligence, thereby cutting communication costs and radically improving the ability to act faster on data from space. It also caters to satellite operators, especially those with smaller satellites like CubeSats, by offering processing and memory options that they might otherwise lack, creating a vital web service for data processing and analytics for satellites unable to meet these demands themselves.
