Esrange Suborbital and Small Satellite Launch Services

Esrange Space Center (operated by Swedish Space Corporation, SSC) is Europe’s northernmost launch facility, located near Kiruna in the Swedish Arctic Circle at 68°N latitude. For 55+ years, Esrange has launched scientific sounding rockets and stratospheric balloons, hosting campaigns for ESA, NASA, DLR, and national space agencies conducting microgravity, atmospheric, and planetary science experiments.

Esrange’s polar location provides unique scientific advantages: proximity to the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) for magnetosphere and ionosphere research, access to polar vortex trajectories for stratospheric balloon campaigns (balloons launched from Kiruna naturally drift east across Scandinavia, Finland, and Russia toward recovery zones), and continuous visibility for polar-orbiting satellite tracking.

SSC is currently investing heavily in making Esrange capable of launching small satellites into polar and sun-synchronous orbits — a service needed by constellation operators requiring SSO inclinations (Earth observation, SAR, weather) that cannot be efficiently achieved from low-latitude facilities. The expanded launch infrastructure, with support from ESA’s Space Solutions Norway/Sweden programs and Swedish government funding, aims to provide European-controlled sovereign launch access without depending on non-European vehicles.
