About

Orbital Baguette One (OB-1) is an orbital micro-launcher being developed by the French startup HyPrSpace (Bordeaux, founded 2019). The vehicle is built around HyPrSpace’s proprietary ‘Terminator’ hybrid rocket engine, which combines a solid HDPE fuel grain with a liquid oxidizer and a helium pressurization system, eliminating the need for a turbopump. OB-1 stands roughly 16 metres tall and is designed to place payloads of up to 235-250 kg into low Earth orbit, targeting the responsive/small-satellite launch market and France’s strategic autonomous access to space. Development has been supported by CNES’s R2D2 contract (~€50 million) and a €35M PADA1 consortium project. As of mid-2026, OB-1 has not flown: HyPrSpace completed a Preliminary Design Review in November 2024 and full-scale ‘Terminator’ engine hot-fire test campaigns in July and December 2024. The company’s near-term milestone is a suborbital demonstrator flight of the related ‘Baguette One’ vehicle (targeted for the first half of 2026), followed by a ‘Ground Toaster’ full flight-ready engine test (Q4 2026) ahead of OB-1’s planned maiden orbital flight, targeted for late 2027.
