About
SkyTerra-1 is Ligado’s geostationary satellite platform enabling direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity for everyday consumer devices, extending coverage beyond cell towers. The satellite is equipped with a 22-meter reflector antenna and precision beamforming, operating in the MSS L-band (1.5/1.6 GHz) — one of only two bands designated by 3GPP for Non-Terrestrial Networks in Release 17. Its bent-pipe architecture allows rapid deployment of new protocols and standards compatibility. Ligado is pursuing a multi-orbit strategy, collaborating with AST SpaceMobile to combine GSO and NGSO (LEO) coverage across North America for lower latency and expanded reach.
