About
TITAN is PIAP Space’s advanced orbital robotic manipulator arm, developed under a €2.6 million European Space Agency contract and brought to Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL 6). The arm features seven degrees of freedom and a 2-metre maximum reach, enabling the full range of motions required for in-orbit servicing tasks including satellite inspection, replacement of components, docking assistance, orbital assembly, cable handling, and on-orbit refueling operations. Positioning accuracy is 0.5 mm in translation and 0.1° in orientation — enabling sub-millimeter dexterous manipulation for component-level servicing tasks in zero gravity. The architecture is inherently redundant: each of the seven joints has independent power lines, data buses, and thermal control systems, improving single-point-of-failure tolerance for long-duration space missions. A modular design allows custom end-effectors to be fitted for different servicing missions, from gripper tools for satellite berthing to specialized interfaces for propellant transfer or orbital assembly. The TITAN system is also adaptable for lunar surface operations with appropriate sealing modifications. PIAP Space, a Polish company within the Łukasiewicz Research Network, draws on decades of industrial and defense robotics expertise for its space systems portfolio including the MANUS system (Manipulator for Argonaut Payload Needs and Unloading Support) developed for ESA’s Argonaut lunar lander, and auxiliary products including the LARIS and MULTIS gripper families and the FORTIS 6-axis Force and Torque Sensor.
