About

e-st@r-II is the follow-on to e-st@r-I, developed by more than 30 Politecnico di Torino students under the European Space Agency’s “Fly Your Satellite!” program. It completed its environmental test campaign at ESA-ESTEC in June 2015 and launched on 25 April 2016 (21:02 GMT) aboard an Arianespace Soyuz (VS14) mission from Kourou, French Guiana, as a secondary payload alongside Sentinel-1B and MICROSCOPE. The 1U CubeSat carried an Active Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) payload for autonomous magnetic-actuation attitude control, combining COTS and custom hardware in a sun-synchronous LEO orbit (perigee 449.4 km / apogee 693.7 km, inclination 98.2°). The mission experienced RF hardware assembly issues after deployment that weakened its downlink signal strength. e-st@r-II decayed from orbit on 9 May 2024.
