About
Terran R is Relativity Space’s second-generation orbital launch vehicle and a major leap in ambition from the retired Terran 1. Where Terran 1 was an expendable small launcher (1,250 kg to LEO, retired after its first flight attempt in March 2023), Terran R is a fully reusable medium-class rocket targeting approximately 20,000 kg to low Earth orbit with both first and second stages returning for propulsive landings — similar in concept to SpaceX Starship but in a smaller class.
Terran R uses Relativity’s Aeon R engines (a closed-cycle derivative of the Aeon 1 that powered Terran 1), burns LOX/liquid methane, and is manufactured using Relativity’s proprietary large-format 3D printing technology (Stargate printers). Relativity claims that 3D printing dramatically reduces part count and manufacturing time compared to traditionally machined rocket components.
The vehicle is designed to be competitive with SpaceX Falcon 9 reusable by targeting similar payload class with reusability from the start. Relativity pivoted its entire focus to Terran R in mid-2023 following the Terran 1 program conclusion. First launch is targeted for the mid-2020s from Cape Canaveral.
