Sich Earth Observation Satellites

The Sich series is a line of Ukrainian Earth observation satellites designed by Yuzhnoye Design Bureau and built in partnership with manufacturer Pivdenmash (Yuzhmash). Sich-1, launched on 31 August 1995 aboard a Tsyklon-3 rocket from Plesetsk, was Ukraine’s first indigenously designed Earth observation satellite, established to demonstrate the country’s independent remote-sensing capability after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The program continued with Sich-1M, launched on 24 December 2004 together with the companion MK-1TS microsatellite, both also designed by Yuzhnoye and built by Yuzhmash. Sich-1M carried a multispectral instrument suite spanning optical, infrared, and microwave wavelengths to support monitoring of the atmosphere, oceans, hydrological and ice conditions, vegetation, and soil cover, though a premature third-stage engine cutoff placed the satellite into a lower-than-planned orbit, shortening its operational life. Later planned members of the family — including Sich-2 and Sich-2-1 — have continued Yuzhnoye’s role as Ukraine’s principal designer of civil Earth observation spacecraft, complementing the state’s satellite-based agricultural, environmental, and security monitoring needs.
