About
Skyloom is establishing an optical data transport network in space designed to address the data transfer bottleneck for Earth Observation and other markets. This network utilizes laser-based communication systems, offering significantly higher capacity (10X to 100X more data than RF systems), super efficiency (smaller size, weight, and power requirements than RF), and enhanced security (less susceptible to interference and intercept). The network consists of several key components:
**V’GER Optical Inter-Satellite Link:** This product line comprises space-based, SDA-compliant multi-Gbps class autonomous lasercom terminals. V’GER enables high bandwidth connections for LEO-LEO, LEO-Ground, LEO-Airborne, and LEO-Maritime links, supporting planetary-scale backhaul and network services. It features a modular design and offers data rates from 1-10 Gbps.
**Scotty Optical Inter-Satellite Link:** Scotty is the user terminal for LEO satellites, providing access to Skyloom’s network. It facilitates multi-Gbps data transfer from LEO to on-the-cloud by connecting LEO assets with Skyloom’s GEO nodes. This system allows LEO satellites to communicate with the Skyloom network without relying on short ground-LEO communication windows. Scotty supports LEO-GEO links up to 20 Gbps, features a hemispherical field of regard, autonomous acquisition and tracking, and is interoperable with the SDA OCT Standard.
**Uhura Geostationary Relay Satellite:** Uhura is Skyloom’s small, high-capacity, multi-user optical relay satellite in geostationary orbit, designed for GEO-LEO and GEO-Ground data transfer. It enables real-time, super low latency data transmission by matching the speed of Earth’s rotation for an always-on connection to ground stations. Uhura features fully regenerative communications, gimbaled optical heads for data relay from LEO/MEO to ground, and an RF backup downlink guaranteeing >99% link availability from space to ground. It supports 20 Gbps LEO-GEO OCT (1550 nm) and 20 Gbps GEO-Ground OCT (1550 nm). The first node is planned for Asia Pacific coverage in Q4 2024.
**Kirk Optical Ground Station (OGS):** Kirk is Skyloom’s optical ground station, designed to be small, versatile, and installable at low cost at traditional ground stations, co-located with data centers, or tactically deployed. It features an optical aperture of <1m with adaptive optics and an RF antenna for downlink and TT&C as required.
