Alcântara Space Center

The Alcântara Space Center (Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara — CLA) is a Brazilian launch facility located in Maranhão state, operated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB/DCTA). Established in 1983, it sits at just 2.3° south of the equator — the most favorably positioned orbital launch site in the Americas — providing significant fuel savings compared to higher-latitude sites for geostationary satellite insertions.

The center has served as the primary base for Brazil's VLS (Veículo Lançador de Satélites) rocket development program and continues to host suborbital missions using VSB-30 and VS-40 sounding rockets. Its location gives launch vehicles roughly 10–15% more payload capacity to GEO compared to Cape Canaveral, due to the additional boost from Earth's rotation near the equator.

In 2019, Brazil and the United States signed a landmark Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA), opening the door for American companies and spacecraft to use Alcântara for orbital launches. This agreement was a major milestone, unlocking access to modern US-built launch vehicles and payloads, and positioning CLA as a competitive commercial spaceport.

Since then, Brazil has been developing commercial launch infrastructure at the site, including agreements to host the Ukrainian-Brazilian Cyclone-4M rocket program. CLA represents Brazil's strategic investment in becoming a key player in the global commercial small satellite and rideshare launch market, leveraging its unrivaled equatorial geography.
