Launch Services from Alcântara Launch Center

Alcântara Launch Center (Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara, CLA) is Brazil’s primary launch facility, operated by the Brazilian Air Force and located at latitude 2.3°S on the Maranhão coast of northeast Brazil — making it the world’s closest major launch site to the equator. Proximity to the equator is critically important for geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) launches: rockets launching from the equator require less propellant to reach GEO than from higher latitudes because they receive a larger boost from Earth’s rotational velocity (465 m/s at the equator vs. 315 m/s at Cape Canaveral).

Alcântara has hosted both Brazilian sounding rocket programs and international launch vehicle programs. The center has launch pads compatible with small and medium-class vehicles, integration facilities, range safety systems, and tracking infrastructure. Brazil has signed technology safeguard agreements (TSA) with the United States, European Union, and South Korea enabling international launch companies to use Alcântara for commercial launches without violating technology transfer restrictions.

Alcântara is a potential launch site for Rocket Factory Augsburg, ArianeGroup (through its Brazilian industrial partnerships), and South American commercial launch startups. The Brazilian government has invested in upgrading Alcântara’s infrastructure as part of its strategy to commercialize the site and generate launch services revenue.
