About ATMOS Space Cargo

ATMOS Space Cargo GmbH is a German company founded in 2022, developing reentry capsules and orbital logistics services for the commercial space market. The company operates from offices in Lichtenau, Germany, and Strasbourg, France, and is funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) and investors including Seraphim, Hightech Gründerfonds, Amadeus Capital Partners, OTB Ventures, E2MC, and others.

ATMOS's core product is the PHOENIX reentry capsule family, which uses a proprietary Inflatable Atmospheric Decelerator (IAD) — a heat shield that is also an aerodynamic braking device — instead of traditional ablative heat shields. The IAD approach reduces mass and environmental impact while improving payload-to-mass efficiency. PHOENIX capsules are free-flying spacecraft with integrated propulsion, power, thermal management, and telemetry, capable of multi-week orbital missions before autonomous deorbit and recovery.

ATMOS offers an end-to-end orbital logistics service: payload integration, launch integration on commercial rockets (SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare), orbital operations and mission control, and controlled reentry with recovery near Santa Maria in the Azores, Portugal. The company has partnered with Space Cargo Unlimited for a seven-flight joint program, integrating the BentoBox microgravity platform inside PHOENIX 2 capsules to establish Europe's first fully commercial station-independent two-way orbital logistics service. PHOENIX 2 is scheduled to launch on SpaceX Falcon 9 in 2026.

ATMOS raised a €25.7 million Series A in 2026 to build out European orbital return infrastructure. The company is ESA-partnered and supports the IAU, HyPrSpace, and other European space ecosystem partners.
