Kuang-Chi (Shenzhen Kuang-Chi Institute of Advanced Technology)

Kuang-Chi is a Chinese advanced-technology group headquartered in Shenzhen, founded in 2010 by five PhD scholars who had studied metamaterials at Duke University and Oxford University. Its core entity, the Shenzhen Kuang-Chi Institute of Advanced Technology, hosts China's State Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Modulation Technology of Metamaterials, the country's first national key laboratory dedicated to metamaterials, and authored China's first national standard for electromagnetic metamaterials.

Kuang-Chi is best known for taking metamaterials from laboratory research to industrial-scale production and application in advanced and defense equipment. It has built a full industrial chain for metamaterials manufacturing and delivered metamaterial structural components, multifunctional curved-surface metamaterial radomes, and conformal antennas for advanced aircraft programs in China. Its listed subsidiary Kuang-Chi Technology (SZSE: 002625) has since applied metamaterial airframe technology to unmanned aircraft, debuting a full-fuselage metamaterial drone.

The group is also historically known, through its separately listed affiliate KuangChi Science Ltd. (HKEX: 00439), for near-space aerospace ventures branded 'Novel Space Service,' including the Traveler near-space balloon platform, the Cloud stratospheric airship, and the Martin Jetpack, acquired via Martin Aircraft Company.
