Kuang-Chi (Shenzhen Kuang-Chi Institute of Advanced Technology) is a Chinese advanced materials company developing electromagnetic metamaterials — engineered materials with microstructured geometries that exhibit electromagnetic properties not found in natural materials, such as negative refractive index, electromagnetic cloaking, and unusually high effective permittivity or permeability.

For satellite communications, Kuang-Chi applies metamaterial engineering to antenna design: creating ultra-thin flat antennas with high gain, ultra-wideband frequency coverage, and anomalous beam steering properties that conventional antenna designs cannot achieve. Metamaterial surfaces (metasurfaces) can be fabricated as planar sheets printed on circuit boards — enabling conformal antennas that can be integrated into vehicle surfaces or aircraft skins rather than mounted as protruding structures.

Kuang-Chi also pursues more speculative research into buoyancy-assisted near-space platforms (stratospheric balloons with metamaterial envelopes) and has publicized research into theoretical advanced propulsion concepts.
