About Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech)

Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), with roots to 1907 and its Tobata campus opening in 1909, operates one of the world's most active university satellite programs through its Laboratory of Spacecraft Environment Interaction Engineering (LaSEINE) and Center for Nanosatellite Testing (CeNT), established in 2010 in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka. Kyutech is a global hub for nanosatellite education, hosting international graduate students who design, build, test, and operate CubeSats.

The BIRDS program ("Joint Global Multi-Nation Birds Satellite Project"), running since 2015, is Kyutech's flagship capacity-building initiative: teams of foreign and Japanese students build near-identical 1U CubeSats to give non-spacefaring nations their first satellites. BIRDS-1 (2017) produced five satellites — GhanaSat-1 (Ghana), Mazaalai (Mongolia), BRAC Onnesha (Bangladesh), Nigeria EduSat-1 (Nigeria), and Toki (Japan) — deployed from the ISS Kibo module. The program has since grown through BIRDS-2 to BIRDS-5, producing roughly 17 CubeSats for countries including Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Nepal, and the Philippines.

Separately, Kyutech's HORYU nanosatellite series demonstrates high-voltage solar power generation in orbit. HORYU-2, launched May 17, 2012, became the first spacecraft in the world to achieve 300V photovoltaic power generation in space, studying spacecraft charging and arcing phenomena relevant to future high-power satellite systems.

Kyutech's satellite work has made it a leading global training ground for small-satellite engineers from developing nations, combining hands-on hardware development with in-house environmental testing via CeNT.
