About Libre Space Foundation

The Libre Space Foundation (LSF) is a Greek non-profit organisation founded in 2015 with a mission to create open-source technologies for space — from ground stations to satellites. Operating from Athens, the foundation believes that open access to space technology accelerates innovation, enables global participation, and democratises space exploration beyond the traditional domain of national agencies and large corporations.

LSF's flagship project is SatNOGS (Satellite Networked Open Ground Stations) — a global network of 500+ community-operated satellite ground stations that collectively provide free access to satellite telemetry and data for researchers, students, and amateurs worldwide. The network tracks hundreds of satellites in orbit and has become a reference infrastructure for the global CubeSat community.

The foundation has developed its own missions: PHASMA, a pair of CubeSats participating in the Greek In-Orbit Demonstration programme, and SIDLOC (Spacecraft Identification and Localization), a system for tracking spacecraft via broad-spectrum beacons received by the SatNOGS network. LSF also contributes to European Commission-funded research programmes including REWIRE (Horizon Europe).

All LSF projects are released under open-source licenses, with software, firmware, hardware designs, and documentation freely available on their GitLab repository. The foundation accepts donations, equipment contributions, code contributions, and bug reports from the global space community to fund future missions and infrastructure development.
