About Montana State University

The Space Science and Engineering Laboratory (SSEL) at Montana State University in Bozeman is one of the longest-running university-based small satellite programs in the United States, with a mission heritage stretching back to the 1990s. SSEL designs, builds, tests, and operates CubeSats and small satellites for space physics and space weather research, giving students end-to-end experience across systems engineering, spacecraft bus design, and mission operations.

SSEL's most notable mission is FIREBIRD (Focused Investigations of Relativistic Electron Burst Intensity, Range, and Dynamics), a two-satellite constellation of 1.5U CubeSats developed jointly with the University of New Hampshire and funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation. Each FIREBIRD spacecraft pairs an MSU-built BIRD bus with a UNH-built FIRE energetic-particle sensor to study microburst precipitation of relativistic electrons from Earth's Van Allen radiation belts. A follow-on pair, FIREBIRD-II, launched in 2015 and operated for several years, producing key science results on radiation belt dynamics.

Beyond FIREBIRD, SSEL has flown or contributed to missions including HRBE, RAX (Radio Aurora Explorer, with the University of Michigan), and other space weather and technology demonstration CubeSats, continuing to serve as a training ground for the next generation of spacecraft engineers.
