About R-Space

R-Space GmbH is an Austrian space startup founded in 2021 by Dr. Carsten Scharlemann, Dr. Christof Obertscheider, and Dr. Wolfgang Treberspurg — all with deep roots in Austrian academic and institutional space research. The company was established around a clear observation: in-orbit demonstration (IOD) had become a bottleneck for space hardware developers, too slow, too complex, and too expensive for the pace of modern new-space development.

R-Space's flagship offering, the GreenBox service, provides customers with a fully standardized, end-to-end pathway to orbit. Customers integrate their experimental payloads into a Payload Accommodation Unit (PAU) with fixed mechanical, electrical, and thermal interfaces, and R-Space handles everything else — spacecraft integration, qualification testing, launch, and on-orbit operations — delivering clean mission data. The customer never needs to become a satellite operator.

The company operates from the Vienna Airport Office Park, with development activities in Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria. R-Space's first two GreenBox satellites were selected to launch aboard an Isar Aerospace Spectrum rocket. The vehicle is the first commercial satellite fully developed and manufactured in Austria.

R-Space is supported by ESA (as an ESA Marketplace partner), FFG (Austrian Research Promotion Agency), and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence, and participates in the ESA Phi-Lab Austria programme.
