Smart Satellite Technology

Beijing Smart Satellite Space Technology Co., Ltd. (智星空间) was established on May 10, 2018, emerging from teams with backgrounds at the China Academy of Space Technology and Chinese Academy of Sciences. The company is one of the earliest Chinese enterprises focused on commercial SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites and is the first company in China to register an X-band SAR satellite in the International Telecommunication Union frequency book.

Smart Satellite launched their first satellite, Smart Satellite 1A, on December 22, 2020 aboard the Long March 8 rocket from Wenchang, Hainan. In May 2022, Smart Satellite 3A was launched via the Tianzhou-4 cargo spacecraft. Their first dedicated SAR satellite, Smart Satellite 2A (Ji Chuang), launched in February 2024 from the sea near Yangjiang aboard the SmartDragon-3 rocket. The company also collaborated with the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute on the ET-SMART-RSS CubeSat.

Smart Satellite plans to build a constellation of 12 SAR satellites designed to achieve millimeter-level deformation monitoring with hourly revisit rates at any location globally. Their SAR data products serve infrastructure monitoring applications including detecting shape changes of land, buildings, railways, and bridges. The company is a member of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and provides both satellite manufacturing and data services to commercial and government clients.
