About Sophia Space

Sophia Space is a Pasadena, California startup founded in 2023 by Dr. Leon Alkalai, commercializing orbital computing technology originally developed at Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The company was incubated through Mandala Space Ventures, a space-technology venture studio, and is staffed largely by former JPL engineers.

Sophia Space builds TILE (Thermal Integrated LEO Edge), a modular AI edge-compute architecture that unifies power generation, compute, and passive thermal management into a single deployable panel. Each TILE combines solar power generation on one face with an array of high-performance compute blades (BLADEs) on the other, using the vacuum of space itself for passive cooling instead of active fans or chillers — driving the large majority of generated solar power directly into computation rather than losing it to cooling overhead. TILEs are designed to scale from a single unit or small rack on a host satellite bus, to companion-orbit clusters of dozens of units, up to a full orbital data center (ODC) of thousands of tiles delivering megawatt-class in-space compute.

The company's mission is to let satellite operators "launch with less mass and more compute power," processing raw sensor data at the orbital edge for faster, lower-latency, more autonomous decision-making instead of downlinking raw data to the ground. Sophia Space has raised $10M in seed funding (announced February 2026), selected Apex satellite buses for its first orbital demonstration mission (targeted late 2027/early 2028), and has a strategic collaboration with Kepler Communications to advance orbital compute and connectivity. Leadership includes CEO Rob DeMillo (ex-JPL, Lincoln Labs), CTO Dr. Leon Alkalai (retired JPL Fellow), and technical advisors including former SpaceX VP Hans Koenigsmann and former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin.
