Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University (SU) is South Africa's leading research-intensive university, located in the historic town of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. Founded in 1918, SU is one of Africa's top universities and a pioneer in space technology on the continent.

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ESL) at SU's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering developed SUNSAT (Stellenbosch University Satellite), South Africa's first satellite. SUNSAT was launched on 23 February 1999 aboard a Delta II rocket as a secondary payload. The 64 kg satellite featured an amateur radio transponder, a store-and-forward messaging system, and a high-resolution Earth observation camera. SUNSAT operated successfully until 2001.

Building on the SUNSAT legacy, SU contributed to the development of ZACube-1 (TshepisoSat), South Africa's first CubeSat, launched in November 2013 on a DNEPR rocket. ZACube-1 demonstrated HF beacon technology for the South African coastal monitoring network. ZACube-2, a 3U CubeSat, was launched in 2017 and supports maritime domain awareness and AIS vessel tracking over South African waters.

The ESL continues to advance small satellite technology and hosts one of Africa's most successful student satellite programs, training engineers in satellite design, systems integration, and space operations.
