University of Massachusetts Amherst

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is a public research university whose Institute for Applied Life Sciences and Riccio College of Engineering support a growing aerospace engineering curriculum, including a dedicated Certificate in Aerospace Engineering. Student-driven small satellite work is centered on UMsat, a CubeSat initiative founded in 2007 by UMass Amherst undergraduates to provide a platform for students to research, design, build, test, and ultimately launch pico-satellites into orbit.

UMsat follows the CubeSat standard, using stackable 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm modular units to build spacecraft aimed at applications such as Earth imaging, remote sensing, and climate-relevant data transmission. The program is explicitly educational in orientation, intended to develop leadership, systems engineering, and technical skills that prepare students for careers in the aerospace industry.

As part of the broader UMass System, Amherst's small satellite efforts complement related CubeSat and smallsat work across the system's campuses, contributing to New England's growing base of university-led space missions and workforce development in satellite engineering.
