Description
The W-Series is Varda's flagship product: a family of free-flying satellite + reentry capsule spacecraft that enable commercial manufacturing in microgravity and return of processed materials to Earth. Each W-Series spacecraft is fully independent — it does not dock with or rely on the ISS or any other space station — and is built end-to-end by Varda in its El Segundo, California facility.
A W-Series mission begins with launch on a commercial rocket (multiple providers used). Once in orbit, the satellite bus operates autonomously while the onboard pharmaceutical or materials processing equipment conducts its experiment — heating, mixing, cooling, and running other manufacturing steps that take advantage of microgravity to produce unique crystal structures or material properties unavailable on the ground. When processing is complete, the reentry capsule separates, reenters the atmosphere, and is recovered on land for extraction and analysis of the product.
Varda has completed six W-Series missions through 2026:

- W-4: New satellite bus and in-house heatshield; pharmaceutical processing demonstration

- W-6: First 2026 launch; autonomous hypersonic flight testing
Customers include biopharma companies (pharmaceutical crystallization for improved drug morphologies), and US government agencies (hypersonic reentry vehicle testing). Varda has an announced collaboration with United Therapeutics for biopharma applications.
