About
ZBLAN (Zirconium-Barium-Lanthanum-Aluminum-Sodium fluoride glass) is a specialty optical fiber material with extraordinary mid-infrared transmission properties (0.2–8 μm wavelength range), far superior to conventional silica fiber for infrared sensing, medical laser delivery, and certain defense and scientific applications. The fundamental problem with ZBLAN fiber made on Earth: during the cooling and solidification process, gravity causes convective flows that introduce micro-crystalline defects, significantly degrading optical performance. In the zero-gravity environment of LEO, ZBLAN solidifies without these defects — producing fiber with potentially 100× better optical performance than ground-manufactured alternatives.
Varda Space is manufacturing ZBLAN fiber optic preforms (the glass rod that is subsequently drawn into fiber) in its W-series spacecraft. After the preforms are produced in the spacecraft’s manufacturing module during an orbital mission of weeks to months, they are returned to Earth in Varda’s reentry capsule for fiber drawing and characterization.
The market for ZBLAN fiber includes mid-infrared laser delivery for medical surgery (kidney stone ablation, tissue ablation for cancer), spectroscopy instruments, and defense IR countermeasure systems. Current ZBLAN fiber sells for $200–$10,000 per meter due to its scarcity — in-space manufacturing at scale could reduce costs while simultaneously improving quality.
