About
Andøya Space (Andøya Space Center) is Norway’s national launch and test facility located on the island of Andøya in Nordland county, northern Norway (69°N latitude). Established in 1962, it is one of Europe’s oldest and most active sounding rocket ranges, having conducted over 1,000 rocket launches for European space agencies and research institutes.
Andøya Space’s location at 69°N provides nearly polar orbit access — ideal for polar and sun-synchronous orbit launches — and its northward ocean corridor allows launch azimuths from polar to high-inclination SSO without overflying populated areas. The site hosts launches for NAROM (Norwegian Centre for Space-related Education), ESRANGE (joint operations with the Swedish Space Corporation), and ESA sounding rocket campaigns.
For the orbital small satellite market, Andøya Space is developing an Orbital Launch Complex (OLC) to accommodate orbital launch vehicles including Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket (targeting 1,000 kg to LEO) and others. The OLC development is supported by the Norwegian Space Agency and Stiftelsen Andøya Space (the owning foundation). Commercial sounding rocket launches from Andøya are available for atmospheric physics, microgravity, and Aurora research experiments.
