About
IABG’s Space Systems Testing and Qualification Services provide satellite manufacturers, space agencies, and new-space companies with access to one of Europe’s most comprehensive and independent environmental test infrastructure portfolios. Operating from its Space Centre at Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen near Munich — and through its joint-venture subsidiary European Test Services (ETS) at ESA’s ESTEC facility in Noordwijk, Netherlands (a partnership with Airbus) — IABG supports every phase of spacecraft qualification from subsystem breadboard testing through full-satellite acceptance and proto-flight campaigns.
Thermal testing capabilities include thermal-vacuum chambers for space simulation, solar simulation, and high-temperature qualification. The flagship Phenix thermal-vacuum chamber at ESTEC (co-operated by ETS) features a 4 m diameter and 10 m usable length for large satellite platforms. Thermal-balance and thermal-cycling tests are performed under representative space vacuum conditions (<10⁻⁵ mbar), verifying thermal control system performance and supporting mathematical model correlation.
Mechanical qualification services encompass multi-axis vibration and shock testing, acoustic testing in diffuse-field reverberant chambers capable of noise levels up to 156 dB SPL, and seismic simulation for ground equipment. The Hydra vibration facility at ESTEC provides six-degree-of-freedom testing with a 20-tonne test table driven by 8 × 680 kN hydraulic actuators, accommodating the heaviest geostationary satellites. Experimental and operational modal analyses (EMA/OMA) characterize structural dynamic behavior and validate finite-element models.
IABG’s newly opened Competence Centre Optics (CCO) is a state-of-the-art facility unique in Europe, purpose-built for testing and qualifying electro-optical satellite payloads — including Earth observation and reconnaissance instruments — under realistic space thermal and vacuum conditions, with high-precision optical metrology, a vibration-decoupled floor structure, and class-compliant cleanroom integration. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, mass property determination (mass, center of gravity, moment of inertia), and material testing and failure analysis round out the portfolio. As a manufacturer-independent organization, IABG provides neutral test and verification services to ESA, DLR, Airbus Defence and Space, Thales Alenia Space, OHB, and a growing portfolio of new-space operators.
