About

SEOSat-Ingenio (Spanish Earth Observation Satellite) was Spain’s flagship Earth observation satellite, developed under the leadership of CDTI (Spain’s technology development center) and INTA, with Airbus Defence and Space Spain as prime contractor. The satellite was designed to provide high-resolution Earth imagery for government and commercial applications.

With a mass of approximately 750 kg, SEOSat-Ingenio was designed to operate in a sun-synchronous orbit at 670 km altitude and provide 2.5-meter panchromatic and 10-meter multispectral imagery with a 55 km swath width. The satellite carried advanced optical instruments developed in Spain.

SEOSat-Ingenio was lost during its launch on 17 November 2020 aboard a Vega rocket (VV17) due to a software error in the upper stage orientation, resulting in the satellite failing to reach orbit. Despite the loss, the program represented a major milestone in Spain’s development of sovereign Earth observation capability and advanced optical satellite technology.
