About
TENACIOUS is a lightweight micro rover developed by ispace-EUROPE (Luxembourg subsidiary), making it the first European-designed, manufactured, and assembled lunar rover, co-funded by the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) and ESA. Built on a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) frame, it measures 54 cm long x 31.5 cm wide x 26 cm tall and weighs approximately 5 kg, with four wheels optimized for traversal across loose lunar regolith. The rover was designed to be deployed from the RESILIENCE lander onto the lunar surface via a ramp mechanism, then autonomously navigate the landing site, collect regolith samples with a small shovel, and image its surroundings with a forward-mounted HD camera. All communications were routed via the RESILIENCE lander acting as a relay to the mission operations center on Earth. TENACIOUS flew aboard HAKUTO-R Mission 2 (launched January 15, 2025) but was unable to deploy following the RESILIENCE lander’s hard landing on June 5, 2025; the mission nonetheless demonstrated successful in-orbit operations and the rover’s engineering heritage remains intact for future missions.
