KOMPSAT-5 (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-5, Arirang-5) is Korea’s first SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging satellite, developed by KARI and launched on August 22, 2013. It carries an X-band SAR sensor capable of producing high-resolution all-weather, day-and-night imagery of Earth’s surface, enabling applications in land mapping, ocean surveillance, disaster monitoring, and environmental observation regardless of cloud cover or lighting conditions. Operating from a 550 km sun-synchronous orbit with a 28-day repeat cycle, the satellite supports Korea’s national geospatial and disaster response needs. KOMPSAT-5 achieves 1 m resolution in spotlight mode, 3 m in standard mode, and 20 m in wide swath mode. The satellite also carries a ship Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver for maritime domain awareness. KOMPSAT-5 was built with significant technology transfer from EADS Astrium (now Airbus Defence and Space) and represents the first step in Korea’s SAR satellite program.
