Metafilter Image Sensor Technology

Metafilter is Metahelios’ proprietary colour filter technology for next-generation camera image sensors. It replaces archaic organic Bayer filter technology, which the company says limits advances in current camera chips due to reduced sensitivity and poor colour sharpness. Metafilter is manufactured directly from the pixels’ material, enabling a simplified image sensor manufacturing supply chain while delivering superior colour definition.

Key benefits highlighted by Metahelios include approximately 30% enhanced sensitivity for night-time photography, unparalleled colour sharpness, and high-quality photos through glare removal, aimed at enhancing the smartphone consumer photography experience and other high-resolution imaging applications. The technology has been developed and validated at Metahelios’ cleanroom nanofabrication facility in Manchester, UK, established in 2023.

The technology has been recognised through selection into leading deep-tech and dual-use accelerator programmes, including Silicon Catalyst/ChipStartUK, NATO’s DIANA accelerator (with a €100,000 grant), and the Luminate OPI accelerator (with $100,000 in funding), reflecting strong external validation of its potential impact on the image sensor industry.
