About

The articulated space boom from Prosix is ultralight and made entirely of carbon fiber, allowing instruments and systems to be deployed reliably and accurately. It uses passive and damped self-deployment, which minimizes the risk of high inertia and shock loads during deployment. This boom developed by Prosix allows folding and unfolding multiple times at various velocities, and depending on mission requirements, reduces structural vibration responses and deployment shocks on elastic hinges. The design reaches up to 28 meters as a full CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) deployable boom, with no metallic mechanisms needed anywhere in the deployment chain, keeping the structure extremely light and dimensionally accurate. It is capable of carrying tip masses such as reflectors or magnetometers at the boom’s free end, making it suitable for magnetometer booms, deployable antenna supports, and other instrument-carrying applications on small and large satellites. The 100% carbon fiber construction and damped deployment mechanism together support Prosix’s broader deployable structures line, which also includes deployable masts, antenna reflectors, carbon fiber feeds, and carbon tube struts for space applications.
